I have chronic fatigue, and high cholesterol. The doc wanted to put me on a statin but I was concerned about the link between statins and fatigue so I asked for some time to try other therapies. Okay, said the doc. Niacin (vit B3) and pantethine (a metabolite of vit B5) are both said to lower total cholesterol and LDL, and raise HDL. Well, I can't tolerate niacin, it hurts my liver, so I tried pantethine. Unfortuately it seems I'm sensitive to pantethine, too. The pharmaceutical dose is 600 to 900mg but I could only take 50 to 100mg. However, I found that even that small dose of pantethine increased my energy levels, restored my failing memory and motivation, and somehow strengthened me. Reading, I found that pantethine is the fundamental component of coenzyme A. CoA is involved in the transport of fatty acids to and from cells as well as to the mitochondria. So I guess I needed more CoA to get fatty acids to my cells and mitochondria! Eventually I had to see the doc again about my cholesterol. A year had passed during which I took a small but effective (for energy) dose of pantethine. To my surprise and delight, my total cholesterol had dropped to a level I hadn't seen since my 20s, my LDL was LOWER than it was when first tested years ago, and my HDL was higher. My ratios are ideal. (In mmol/Ls) my total chol went from 7.4 to 6.2 My LDL went from 4.9 to 3.3 My HDL went from 1.8 to 2.4 So apparently, pantethine inhibits the production of cholesterol in the liver, and it accelerates fatty acid breakdown in the mitochondria, thereby destroying more cholesterol. And it does this while generating energy! So try pantethine for your high cholesterol. It works for me. Thorne is a brand I trust for quality, too.
